Recently, student councillors from both primary and secondary schools across the St. Francis CMAT visited the Trust’s headquarters to meet with the CEO and Directors of Education. The purpose of the visit was to provide the student leaders with an opportunity to share their ideas and perspectives on how to make their schools even better. Central to the discussions was the theme of ‘belonging’ – ensuring that every student feels valued and part of the wider St Francis family.

Central to the discussions was to reinforce the British value of democracy, discussing how student voice can influence decision-making in schools and how councils can play an active role in shaping school policies. The students engaged in thoughtful conversations offering suggestions on how to strengthen connections between students and staff, improve communication and how to create inclusive environments where everyone feels heard. A particularly creative suggestion was to introduce pets into every classroom, every exam and every meeting! Why? Because furry friends can reduce stress, boost wellbeing and make every student feel more at home!

The session was highly interactive, with the CEO and directors encouraging open dialogue and listening carefully to each idea. Students left feeling empowered, knowing their views are valued, whilst the CEO gained valuable insights into the lived experiences of pupils across the Trust.  By working together in this way, the Trust is strengthening both a sense of belonging and democratic engagement, showing that collaboration between students and leaders is key to shaping thriving, inclusive schools within the St Francis family.
